Healing power of the environment Doruk Nilüfer Hospital, Bursa (TR)
With its futuristic design, the Doruk Nilüfer Hospital in Bursa has made the shortlist of the World Architecture Festival 2024. The hospital relies on the healing power of good architecture – and on sanitary products from Geberit.
The effect of a building on people is the subject of many scientific studies. It is obvious that a clinic group pays great attention to this when building a new hospital. This is what happened in the case of the Doruk Nilüfer Hospital in Bursa (TR). ‘Studies show that natural light speeds up recovery and has a positive effect on mood,’ says Prof. Dr. Zeynep Kahveci of the Doruk Health Group. That is why patient rooms, waiting areas and common rooms were designed with a view of the outdoors. ’We also use soft colours and harmonious lighting to make the hospital environment calmer and more comfortable.’
Enormous project

The ambitious project in the Turkish metropolis of Bursa covers an area of 55,000 square metres, which is almost the size of eight football pitches. It includes operating theatres, patient rooms, specialised polyclinic areas and hydrotherapy pools. ‘We wanted an architecture that supports the recovery process of our patients,’ says the professor. The contract was awarded to the Istanbul-based architecture firm Zoom/TPU, which specialises in hospital projects around the world.
The futuristic lobby is a spectacular centrepiece: organic forms, lots of white and metre-high columns that rise from the ground floor to the first floor as structural elements. ‘Our project contract for the Doruk Nilüfer Hospital included the interior design,’ says architect Yunus Emre Kara. The aim was to design a hospital that offers a level of service that meets international standards and whose design is exciting. This has been achieved: the spectacular building was shortlisted for the World Architecture Festival 2024.
Highest hygiene standards

In addition to the design, the materials are also important. They should be sustainable, durable and hygienic, and this naturally also applies to the bathroom. Many Geberit products came out on top in the bathroom. Geberit iCon toilets, Piave taps and VariForm washbasins are installed in the bathrooms, as are products from the Bambini line in children's areas. Zeynep Kahveci says: ‘Geberit products, especially the toilets, are designed with a strong focus on cleanliness and hygiene. This makes them very pleasant for patients to use, but they are also easy to clean, which reduces the workload of our employees.’
